Sony receives Technology & Engineering Emmy for contribution to NMOS
Sony has received a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for its contribution to Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS), recognising its work to advance interoperability in networked live production.

The award, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, is shared with the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), BBC and Streampunk Media for their collective work establishing NMOS as a control framework
for IP-based broadcast production.

NMOS is a suite of open specifications developed under AMWA that enables discovery, registration and control of video and audio devices from different manufacturers across networked production environments.

Its role has become
increasingly important as broadcasters move toward IP workflows, where cameras, monitors, switchers and other equipment from multiple vendors need to operate within the same infrastructure.

Sony has implemented NMOS across products including its HDC Series cameras,
HDCE Series camera extension adaptors, MLS-X1 and XVS Series switchers and BVM Series monitors, as well as the Nevion VideoIPath orchestration platform and Virtuoso software-defined media node.

The company joined AMWA’s NMOS standards development activities in
2016 and subsequently released its NMOS implementation as open-source software.

Sony said the reference implementation has enabled other equipment manufacturers to develop and validate interoperable products more easily, helping accelerate adoption of the specification across the broadcast
industry.

Ryoichi Sakuragi, head of real content solutions business at Sony, said: “By open-sourcing our reference implementation and working closely with AMWA, the BBC, Streampunk Media, and the wider industry, we have helped establish an ecosystem
where multi-vendor interoperability is no longer a challenge, but an expectation.

“This recognition reflects our long-standing commitment to open standards and collaborative innovation in the industry, in pursuit of scalable, flexible and simplified production workflow to
further empower creators and shape the future of content production.”

Sony was elected to the AMWA Board of Directors in 2017 and has continued to contribute to development of the NMOS ecosystem.

The Technology & Engineering
Emmy Awards recognise developments and standardisation work that have materially affected television engineering.

Sony has previously received Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for technologies including its HDC-4300 4K system camera and BVM Series OLED critical evaluation monitors.
