Researchers at the Pohang University of Science and Technology are developing contact lenses that project 3D holograms using embedded metasurfaces.
The AR contact lenses can preserve the natural field of view
for a greater feeling of immersion when worn directly over the eye.
The researchers envision applications such as environmental monitoring, identity recognition, diagnosis, and
real-time navigation.
Junsuk Rho, study author, Pohang University of Science and Technology,
commented: “In settings, such as healthcare, the lenses could assist medical professionals by
overlaying vital information during procedures.
“Additionally, the lenses could serve personal health
monitoring purposes, displaying real-time biometric data.”
The researchers need to overcome difficulties
related to metasurface production, ensuring the biocompatibility of the materials, due to
the direct contact between contact lenses and the human eye.
