Old Trafford could become one of the first UK sites to install 5G.
The Mail on Sunday reported that Vodafone is in talks with Manchester United to launch 5G at its
Old Trafford stadium.
Vodafone, Manchester United’s former sponsor, is reportedly in talks about fitting fibre-optics in the stadium to
ensure it will be ready for the launch of 5G.
At the Mobile World Congress trade show in
Barcelona, FC Barcelona announced it had partnered with the owner of 02, Telefonica, to launch 5G at its Nou
Camp stadium, making it the first stadium in Europe to install 5G.
FC Barcelona announced that 5G will be used
to beam videos of matches to homes and allow fans to watch games on VR headsets once Nou Camp
stadium installs wireless 360-degree cameras.
While there has been no formal announcement on how 5G will be used
at Old Trafford, it could be used in a similar fashion to conduct TV interviews with players on the
pitch, using holograms of presenters.
There is also an opportunity to improve the speed of video assistant referee (VAR) technology.
