Google has announced a new subsea cable, linking the USA to the UK and Spain to support the network that powers Google Meet, Gmail and Cloud.
In a video to announce the new Grace Hopper cable Google
says 98% of international internet traffic is carried by subsea cables
that transmits data at the speed of light.
The cable joins the
technology company’s other private subsea cables, Curie, Dunant and Equiano and is
its first investment in a private subsea cable route to the
UK, and its first-ever route to Spain.
It will be equipped with
16 fibre pairs (32 fibres) and will incorporate novel optical fibre switching
which will increase communications reliability.
This cable is named after computer
scientist and United States Navy rear admiral Grace Brewster Murray Hopper (1906–1992).
