Staff at Gatwick Airport in the UK were forced to write flight information for passengers on wipe-clean whiteboards for nearly the whole of Monday (20 August) due to a technical problem with its digital screens.
According to Gatwick Airport's Twitter account, the issue
was caused by a fault with Vodafone's IT systems
- rendering the big screens inoperable. Vodafone said a damaged
fibre cable was the cause of the problem.
Apologising
to customers, a Gatwick spokesman said the airport's "manual
contingency plan", which included having extra staff on hand
to help direct passengers, had worked well.
According to passengers
the whiteboards were updated via staff listening to a
walkie talkie, who would then erase and update the information.
