Intel has sent 500 drones into the sky for a light show that smashes its own record made when the company used 100 drones in shows in 2015. Raising the number to 500 was a huge step that required the development of new technologies, according to the team that staged the show.
The record was broken when the synchronised drones, each carrying an LED light, to
the air in Krailling, Germany. The lights formed the number 500 as well as the
Intel logo and other 3D shapes.
Intel used its new Shooting Star drones controlled by
software running on a laptop. The system can be run a single operator but two
were involved (one for backup) to scoop the Guinness World Record for the Most
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) airborne simultaneously on October 7, 2016.
The lightweight Shooting Star
drone has been specifically designed for airborne lightshows and advertising. Alongside huge advances on drone
technology, Intel has also beefed up its flight controller, making shows easier to setup, update
and operate.
