NHK begins 4k, 8k resolution test broadcasting in Japan
NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, began testing of 4K and 8K resolution broadcasting on its BS satellite channels at the start of August 2016. The move comes as a measure to test the technology for broadcasting ultra-high definition content.

NHK committed to offering 8K broadcasting for the
opening ceremony of the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics
as well as swimming and track and field games. Public
viewing events for 8K broadcasting are also located in
six venues including in Tokyo and Osaka.

The test
is hoped to popularise 4K and 8K content for
the public and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
in Japan is planning to start 4K and 8K
broadcasting by 2018 it in time for the Tokyo Olympics.
