Samsung glasses-free 55’ LCD targets DOOH
Samsung Electronics will bring a glasses-free 3D, 55” LCD TV to market within three years according to reports from FPD China 2011. The company showed off a prototype model, at the Shanghai exhibition, March 15 to 17, 2011. The display is designed for public places where 3D content can be viewed without glasses from nine different viewpoints within a distance of 2.5m to 6m.

The TV supports full HD resolution, a brightness of 500cd/m2, contrast
ratio of 4000:1 and easy switching to 2D or 3D.

Samsung says
the prototype is based on CFL backlighting but when they commercialise the
display in about three years, the retail unit will probably be LED
backlit.

Tech-On, technology news site run by Nikkei Publications, said the
TV was created with two LCD panels.

“The first LCD panel functions
as a lens and shows different images to the right and left
eyes. And when the optical refraction index of the first LCD panel
is not changed, the TV shows 2D images,” the site reported.
