Sony and IBM are looking at a retro solution to a modern problem as they unveil magnetic tape storage that can store up to 330 terabytes in a cartridge small enough to fit in the palm of a hand.
The discovery, that ups the storage capacity of
conventional magnetic tape storage by approximately 20 times that
currently available, was outlined on August 2, 2017 at
the 28th Magnetic Recording Conference in Japan.
Sony collaborated
with IBM Research in Zurich, Switzerland to combine Sony
magnetic tape with a lubricant that can reduce friction
on the magnetic head.
