Samsung breakthrough turns windows into displays
Windows will double as displays and light sources if an LED breakthrough, reported by Samsung, comes to market. The company claims it has discovered a way to produce cheaper, large display panels on normal glass. The news comes from Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology and is published in scientific journal Nature Photonics.

“In ten years, window panes will double as
lighting and display screens, giving personality to buildings,”
said one of the Samsung researchers working on the
project.

According to the Korea Times the team were
successful in fabricating single crystalline Gallium Nitride on
amorphous glass substrates. In simple terms this means large
displays at lower costs. The process actually increases the
size of the LEDs produced.

Samsung has said
the technology could take another 10 years to develop for commercial production.
