A research team at Texas A&M’s interface ecology lab has come up with ZeroTouch, a multitouch interaction system capable of tracking over 20 individual points, but which requires no actual touch surface.
The system, which is based on an array of IR LEDs and IR detectors, is modular and can be mounted around the outside of any display, or can enable so-called free air touch with no surface at all.

provides a run-through
of the interface,
which was demonstrated
at the recent
CHI event in
Canada, as well
as showing the
free-air potential of ZeroTouch.
